ArtSS in the Open
ArtSS in the Open is a project of Art Sandy Springs and the City of Sandy Springs to enrich the quality of life for Sandy Springs residents and visitors through public art and special arts events. The project launched right after Sandy Springs was formed in 2005. The first sculpture competition in 2008, attracted 100 national and international submissions, with four permanent works purchased with private funds to launch the City’s public art collection. In 2014, underwritten with a private grant from Northside Hospital, The Playable Art Park opened at Abernathy Greenway Park to national praise with six huge sculptures built by artists for kids to play on. It has become a popular regional playground destination for children of every age.
In 2018, an annual sculpture competition was created as part of the ArtSS in the Open program. Each year, following a call for submissions, selected finalists will have their work on display at the City Green, creating an annually changing sculpture art gallery in the park. At the end of the exhibition, the City will purchase at least one of the sculptures and provide permanent placement in locations throughout the city.
